Abstract

Patient medication adherence is necessary in therapeutic management of hypertensive patients. This study was aimed to measure adherence to antihypertensive therapy and to compare the results of MMAS (Morisky Medication Adherence Scale) and pill count in measuring adherence of hypertensive patients at Pacar Keling Primary Health Center in Surabaya. This study was a cross sectional study. Data collection was done during the month of February 2015. The sample was hypertensive patients who received antihypertensive drugs and/or prescription of antihypertensive drugs in Pacar Keling Health Centers in February 2015. The sample was selected with accidental sampling techniques. The Fishers Exact test was performed to examine the associations between the results of two methods. From 36 patients that participated in the study, 21 (58.3%) of respondents were aged 45-64 years and 26 (72.2%) were female. The results of MMAS-8 method showed that 69,4%; 25,0%; and 5,6% of respondents had low, medium, and high medication adherence to the therapy respectively. Meanwhile 22 (61,1%) of patients was categorized as nonadhere and 14 (38.9%) as adhere with pill count method. Fishers Exact test results indicated no relationship between the adherence measurement results with MMAS-8 and pill count. Thus, it can be concluded in this study that the results of MMAS-8 was different from the result of pill count. Pharmacist need to be aware of the low adherence to medication of patients with hypertension. This low adherence should be improved with interventions such as patient education, reminders and family support. Patients need to see the importance of maintaining blood pressure and the benefits of their therapy.
