Abstract

Because of the danger posed to humans and animals, cadmium is one of the heavy metals are harmful to the envi ronment. One of the plants that can survive is Amaranthus cruentus L. Therefore in this study, to know the effect of cadmium on the growth of Amaranthus cruentus L., the hydroponics method which were used. Amaranthus cruentus L. treated with cadmium metal in liquid Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) with various concentrations (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 ppm Cd 2+ ). Then observed its growth include the color of leaves, roots and stem length and number of leaves. From this study, the results obtained is the fertile growth has occurred in plants with 10 to 20 ppm Cd 2+ ion concentration, and declined in the media with 30 ppm Cd 2+ ion consentration. The color of leaves was not found significant differences between control and treatment. On the results of microscopic observation, it was not found any differences in stem and le af tissues between the media of 20 ppm and 40 ppm Cd 2+ ion concentration in the first and third week of treatment. The addition of Cd 2+ ion consentration causes a decrease in growth on the Amaranthus cruentus L., so it can be used as early signs of exposure to excess C on Amaranthus cruentus L..
