Abstract

ODT ( Orally Disintegrating Tablet) of piroxicam is an orally tablet containing piroxicam as active ingredient that used in mouth and dispersed in saliva without the need of water in less than 30 seconds that can be used for the treatment of arthritis, r heumatoid, spondilitis ankylosa and osteoarthritis suffered by geriatric patient. The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of CMC -Ca as superdisintegrant on physical characteristics of piroxicam orally disintegrating tablet including hardness, friability, disintegration time a nd dissolution with gelatin 1% as binder and mannitol base prepared by freeze drying method. The formula of piroxicam orally disintegrating tablet was made from three formulas, F1 used gelatin 1% without CMC -Ca, F2 used gelatin 1% and CMC -Ca 2,5% and F3 used gelatin 1% and CMC- Ca 7,5% with piroxicam 20 mg/tablet. The result of this experiment could be concluded that F1 which only used gelatin 1% gave the best for piroxicam orally disintegrating tablet because it had piroxicam content, hardness, disintegrat ion time and dissolution which fulfill the requirements in the guidelines, while friability had the best value compared to the other formula.
