Abstract

Surgical treatment for parkinson disease include deep brain stimulation (DBS) and the now rarely performed ablative procedures thalamotomy and pallidatomu. DBS can be performed unilaterally or bilaterally to treat medication resistant motor symptoms of PD. The procedure involves implanting an electrode stereotactically placed into a target nucleus such as the globus pallidus internus (GPi). or the subthalamic nucleus (STN). The thalamus can also be a target for individuals with severe tremor. Goal of DBS : reduce "off" time, reduce dyskinesias, smooth out motor fluctuations, possibly, reduce medication requirments.
