Abstract

Stroke is the third cause of death after cardiovascular disease and cancer. Stroke is a clinical syndrome characterized by sudden onset of neurologic focal deficit that persists for at least 24 hours and is due to an abnormality of the cerebral circulation. Ischemic stroke are caused by occlusion (thrombus formation or embolic) of a cerebral artery. Most of ischemic stroke patients experience blood pressure elevation which is a body response to compesate the occlusion in cerebrovascular. Proper hypertension management in acute stroke takes effect to morbidity and mortality of stroke. One of the antihypertension therapy is calcium channel blocker (CCB) agents. A prospective-observational study of ischemic stroke patient with CCB was performed in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital. The study was focused on CCB utilization pattern and identification of the actual drugrelated problems (DRPs). Data was collected from patient medical records on March 2013 to June 2013 period. The result showed that 32 patients received CCB intravenously or orally. The most frequently given CCB is oral amlodipine with dose 10 mg once a day (65.6%). CCB on ischemic stroke patients were given as single therapy, but sometimes it’s combined with other antihypertension agents. In this research, ischemic stroke patients in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital had been analyzed to have no drug-related problems associated with CCB administration.
