Abstract
Women and men talk differently. Women are more conscious of their status than men. Therefore, women are considered to be more polite and more careful with their speech than men. The differences in language use between women and men are addressed in Coates’ theory. It is said that women and men develop different communicative competence. This study aims to identify women’s and men’s linguistic features used by female and male characters in Hidden Figures movie. In this study, the writer uses qualitative approach. Coates’ (2013) theory on women’s and men’s linguistic features was applied as the main theory. The data were taken from the script of Hidden Figures movie. All features of women’s and men’s linguistic features proposed by Coates, were found in this study. They are minimal responses (8), hedges (22), tag questions (4), questions (82), commands and directives (43), swearing and taboo language (10), and compliments (7). Questions are the linguistic feature most frequently used by the characters in Hidden Figures. The female characters used the seven features, while the male characters used only four features namely questions, commands and directives, swearing and taboo language, and compliments.
