Abstract

This thesis discusses the representation of gender discrimination experienced by office lady (OL) in comedy-musical Japanese animation (anime) Aggretsuko (アグ レッシブ烈子). This thesis uses descriptive qualitative approach and Roland Barthes' Two-Stage Signification Semiotic to analyze the conditions of gender discrimination experienced by the main character Retsuko as a representation experienced by OL in Japanese workplace. The analysis was carried out using three main components namely denotation, connotation and myth in cultural perspective based on markers and markings in the process of signification, and using concept of gender nature and nurture theories as an analysis supporting theories. There are numerous representation of gender discrimination at work which occurred in stereotype, subordination and verbal also non-physical violence in the form of power harassment (pawahara) carried out by Ton, Retsuko's Boss. Also moral harassment (morahara) indirectly carried out by Tsubone, Retsuko's senior employee. In addition to discriminations, also presents a solidarity in the form of sisterhood performed by Washimi and Gori as a protection for Retsuko against gender discrimination in their office. In reality, sisterhood established by women to protect each other and fight gender discrimination that occurs in workplace. The representation of gender discrimination occurs in Aggretsuko is a small bits of real gender discriminations that occurs in Japanese workplace.
