Abstract
Slip of the ear explains a condition when listeners perceived something that does not correspond to the speaker‘s intended utterances. This study aimed to find what types and the most frequent type of slip of the ear that occurred in a quiet situation based on classification of slip of the ear by Bond (2005). The participants involved in this study were 40 Indonesian adult age 18-60 years old and were given listening task to participants. Participants had to hear 10 utterances spoken by children 4-6 years old. The finding showed there were 226 incorrect repetitions categorized into 12 types of slip of the ear which are vowel misperception, consonant misperception, segment order, phonological reduction, language varieties, nonwords, content and function words, morphological misperception, well-formed and ill-formed, constituent, argument structure and function, and semantical misperception. The finding indicated that the most frequent type occurred is content and function words, with percentages of 26.20%. The conclusion is that the occurrence of slips of the ear experienced by adults in perceiving children‘s speech in the quiet situation showed that the adults perceived the target words based on the use the linguistic knowledge they know.
