Abstract
The presence of queer is still hardly accepted by the heterosexual community until to date. The lack of recognition toward queers is presented in S.J. Sindu’s Marriage of a Thousand Lies. This study aims to examine the depiction of heteronormativity, in Sri Lankan-American immigrants, and lesbian continuum, as the way a lesbian negotiates the heterosexual society, in the novel. Lucky, as a lesbian in the second generation of Sri-Lankan American immigrants, waves queer friendship to negotiate the heteronormativity she experiences. This study uses queer criticism as the research approach and applies lesbian continuum as the main theory to examine same-sex friendship between lesbians in the novel. Qualitative method is used to capture queerness perceived as the social problem. The dialogues and narratives in the novel which indicate heteronormativity and queerness are carefully collected and analysed to answer the statements of the problems in the study. Although Lucky’s family had moved from a conservative country, Sri Lanka, to a country embracing queer rights, America, they cannot renounce the heteronormativity from their country of origin. This study reveals that a lesbian in the Sri Lankan-American immigrants weaves same-sex friendship as an alternative to gain emotional support as a lesbian, yet the desire for genital sexual experience in the lesbian continuum is inevitable. Moreover, maintaining women-double life is also undertaken to gain acceptance and recognition by the Sri Lankan-American community. The acts caused by hatred towards queerness vividly emerge in both Eastern and Western countries in the form of heteronormativity because it is hard to diminish in any heterosexual community. Subsequent studies should examine more on queerness in Eastern countries to reveal the struggles and oppression experienced by them since most undertaken studies merely focused on queerness cases within Western countries.
