Abstract
The root of women oppression is patriarchy, the social system which indoctrinates the belief that women are submissive and weak. This paper examines the women oppression coming from a patriarchal system presented in Kim Fu‘s novel For Today I Am a Boy. In this novel, the mother and her three daughters; Adele, Helen, and Bonnie struggle to fight the oppression coming from the patriarchal family they are living in. In Sylvia Walby‘s Theorizing Patriarchy, it is said that radical feminist believes that women's oppression is the most widespread and deepest form of oppression. Applying qualitative approach, this study focuses in analyzing the oppression in the form of private patriarchy shaped by the patriarchal structures. Through the concept of patriarchal structures, this study examines the narration and dialogues that indicate the injustice treatments experienced by the female characters. The women of Huang are portrayed as powerless women oppressed by a patriarchal father. They also experience many kinds of patriarchal oppression coming from their closest people: father, husband, and boyfriend. Through the concept of self-determination, how these female characters fight against the patriarchal oppression is examined. Huang family as the manifestation of patriarchal society shaped by the patriarchal structures proves the existence of patriarchal oppression against women and submissive female characters in contemporary young adult literature.
