Abstract
This study aims to reveal the gender identity displayed by the main character in the Tanjung Kemarau novel and describe the relationship between Madurese culture and homosexuality. The researcher found the phenomenon of homosexuality related to the Madurese community's cultural values. This study uses a qualitative approach that is presented descriptively by outlining data related to gender performativity. The theory used in this research is gender performativity by Judith Butler. The focus of the research is to identify a series of actions carried out repeatedly by the main characters to get a natural effect and discover the relationship between Madurese culture and homosexuality in this novel. The results showed: first, that gender expression could be identified through performativity by looking at the appearance, behavior, and intimate interaction of these characters. Second, homosexuality in this novel can be understood as a negotiation toward the failed system in Madurese culture and society.
