Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of metadiscourse markers by Indonesian male and female in their social academic articles. It is designed to examine the way Indonesian male and female apply metadiscourse markers in their articles in order to build an effective academic writing. In addition, it uses a mixed-method to statistically measure the huge data of the corpus and then descriptively analyze based on the contextual interpretation according to the Hyland’s metadiscourse framework (2005). In this case, the data are obtained from 30 articles written by male and 30 articles by female, taken from six different disciplines in social field. The next step do statistical analysis using Pearson chi-square to answer the hypotheses. The finding shows that there is no significant differences in the overall frequency of interactive and interactional metadiscourse in both Indonesian male and females’ articles. In addition, both male and female employ greater interactive markers instead of interactional one. In the interactive category, transition and frame markers are the most frequently used features by both genders, while interactional one, both male and female demonstrate exactly the same frequency except self-mention, where female accustomed to use such feature more than male authors. Thus indicates that female writers tend to more confident, involved, intimate and socially engaged with the target readers, while male apparently more structured by putting more attention on the organization of text. These results may possibly be attributed by the background of the authors and the cultural influence of their communication pattern in their daily life.
