Abstract

The phenomenon of student’s engagement in classroom activities is an interesting case to be analyzed. One of the obstacles in teaching process is the engagement of the students in the class activity. especially in the present situation where there is a COVID-19 pandemic that has forced learning to stop at school. the step taken by the government is to implement online classes where students can take school lessons from home. This study focused finding the appropriate teaching techniques that can improve the student’s engagement by observe the teaching techniques used by the teacher and identified the student engagement in online English grammar lessons. The sample of this study were students of SMA Negeri 1 Tanjung Selor 10th grade, and the classes that were sampled were class X IPS 4 and X MIPA 4. Data collection was done by observing in an online class using ZOOM application. This research was conducted by using qualitative method and theories from Ur (2006) about teaching techniques and student engagement Barkley (2010). The method used to obtain the data is Conducting the observation and Interview. The results of the study show that from observations conducted, it shows that online classes are difficult challenge for teachers in improving student’s engagement, where the level of student engagement found is low although the teacher use various of techniques in online classes activity, the most dominant technique used by the teacher is Teacher-students Exchange followed by Reception with no overt response.
