Abstract

The discussion of women’s linguistic features is always intriguing because women’s role and status keep changing over time. Films can be used as objects to analyze women's linguistic features because they are capable of displaying the conditions of women in the past and in the recent times. This study has a purpose to find the similarities between the women’s linguistic features performed by Esther in “A Star Is Born” (1976) and those by Ally in “A Star Is Born” (2018). The writer also tried to find social factors that may give impacts on the women's linguistic features performed by both characters. In analyzing the data, the theory proposed by Coates and Holmes were applied. The descriptive qualitative method was implemented in this study. The result of the study displays that all of the seven women's linguistic features proposed by Coates are found in Esther's and Ally's utterances. Besides, there are five women’s linguistic features performed by Esther and those by Ally that have almost the same number. The order from the most similar number of the frequency to the least similar number of the frequency are commands and directives, hedges, compliments, swearing and taboo language, and tag questions. Furthermore, the findings also show that social factors such as participants, setting, topic, and function give impacts on the women’s linguistic features produced by both characters.
