Abstract
Racism against people of color, especially against African Americans, has been an issue since long ago and can still be found in nowadays society. A form of racism happens called systemic racism, racial oppression, which is established in parts of society, such as education, healthcare, jobs, housing, etc. Thus, this study aims to explore the systemic racism found in Maurice Carlos Ruffin's novel entitled We Cast A Shadow. This study analyzes the forms of systemic racism that is shown through the institutions’ action towards the Black American in the novel by using the Theory of Oppression by Joe R. Feagin which included the White racial frame and racist deology; discrimination in many aspects: government, law, policing, housing, education, and culture; and racial hierarchy with divergent group interests. Firstly, this study collects the evidence through the plot and dialogue involving the main character, who is an African American. Then, this study elaborates on the way the main character and his son is oppressed by systemic racism and how his mind is affected. Ultimately, the main character thinks that his son will be saved in society if only he is white. This study concludes that systemic racism can affect someone's way of thinking so greatly.
