Abstract

Before feminism movement in 19th century, women were oppressed and restricted. After living under the pressure of society, women wanted to have the right to express themselves and be equal to men. Journey of women was written in literature. Literature that was known for the domination of women is fairy tales. Hero and villain in fairy tales are often females. It is the same in Andersen’s The Little Mermaid and Christo’s To Kill a Kingdom. Both texts are fairy tales, precisely To Kill a Kingdom is a retelling of The Little Mermaid. This study aims to explore the portrayal of women in both texts and identify the intertextual relationship between the two by applying Kristeva’s Intertextuality. Data is collected through close reading method. There are several findings. The mermaid is definition of selfsacrifice woman which reflects ideal women in 19th century period, whereas Lira is epitome of ambitious and strong woman like modern women nowadays. Allusion was found in character name and description which is Lira and unnamed little mermaid have similar physical appearance of half-fish half-human. Moreover, the texts are proven to have same underlying pattern in the following order: going to sea surface and seeing the prince, saving the prince, becoming human, meeting the prince, spending time together, and intending to kill the prince. Re-vision was found in characters such as Lira, the wicked version of unnamed little mermaid; in plot structure; and sociocultural condition that shows similar setting but added advanced technology and modern culture in the transformation text.
