Abstract

Latar belakang: Mastikasi merupakan salah satu fungsi penting sistem stomatognati yang melibatkan otot mastikator sebagai komponen aktif. Aktivitas otot mastikator yang selama masa pertumbuhan diduga berdampak pada pertumbuhan kraniofasial yang dapat memicu terjadinya maloklusi Tujuan: Untuk mendapatkan gambaran peran otot masseter sebagai salah satu otot mastikator pada masa pertumbuhan hingga menyebabkan maloklusi Metode: Sumber pustaka yang digunakan dalam penyusunan artikel melalui beberapa database dengan deskripsi terkait fungsi mastikasi, otot masseter, lengkung geligi, pertumbuhan kraniofasial dan maloklusi. Hasil: Studi menunjukkan bahwa aktivitas otot masseter berperan penting dalam menentukan fitur kraniofasial. Kesimpulan: Malfungsi dari otot mastikator selama masa pertumbuhan dapat menyebabkan pertumbuhan kraniofasial yang abnormal sehingga meningkatkan tendensi terjadinya maloklusi
