Abstract

A thesis submitted as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Sarjana Degree of the English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Airlangga University Surabaya. This study is a descriptive study in error analysis on morphological and syntactic levels in the production of English writing made by the tenth grade students at Ta’miriyah senior high school Surabaya. The data are collected from thirty students of X (tenth) grade who were in X.6 class at Ta’miriyah senior high school Surabaya. In this case, all types of morphological and syntactic error are classified and described based on instrument analysis on grammatical errors, affixation errors, functional categories, grammatical features on verbal features, and modal auxiliaries. Based on the result of the analysis morphological errors fall into double marking of verb, omission of the suffix ‘d’ or -ed, omission of the suffix ‘s’ singular, agreement between numbers, irregular verbs, modal auxiliaries occurred with past, and inappropriate plural ending. While the syntactic errors fall into errors in using progressive, omission of verb ‘to be’, omission of the main verb, present instead past, errors in verb-infinitive-to, and errors in pronouns. The result of the analysis shows that both morphological and syntactic errors comprise big number of errors in this study. However, the occurrence of morphological errors is higher than syntactic one. In morphology, the most error occurred in errors in double marking of verb. In syntax, the most error occurred in using progressive.
