Abstract
Until now, teen pregnancy remains as a significant issue in the United States of America, not only in the scope of social aspect, but also in the area of government spending. In this matter, it is commonly known that more negative effects comes as the results, than the positive ones. The effects on the teenage mother are tremendous, in short, it is like they are doomed to all misfortunes. Yet, this notion is rejected by Juno, the other and contradictive teenage mother representation, offered by Juno film. This article draws on Foucault’s concepts of Discourse and power/knowledge to analyze the various discursive constructions of teenage mother discourses in the Juno film and examines the competition occurring between the common and alternative discourses of teenage mother. Since Cultural Studies views cultural texts as a ‘site of contestation over meaning,’ this research then aims to suggest the representation of teenage mother in Juno film as a challenging discourse in the context of the common teenage mother discourse. Dominant discourses of teenage mother identified included all sorts of discursive practices of opposing teenage mother which result in alienating, bad-labelling teenage mother. The usage of Foucault’s unique concept of power/knowledge enables this alternative teenage mother discourse to enter the contestation of teenage mother discourses and in the end, comes up as the contending discourse toward the common teenage mother discourse.
