Abstract

Racism is a global issue that is never-ending issue. The issue of racism has brought much grief and misery included that has been unfair about the human dignity that should not happen in this time. It is a social problem that is inherent in life. Racism was recorded as a history in the present development in the various aspects of life. Since the issue of racism is a general, the topic is challenging the writer to analyze the object in the film is Twelve Years a Slave. The purpose of this study is revealing the racism in the film Twelve Years a Slave embodied in the Solomon Northup character. This film will be analyzed by using the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) focusing on historical approach by Ruth Wodak. The writer of the study focuses not only on linguistics aspect of racism but on sociopolitical and historical context of racism in United States in two different time, in the past and nowdays. To investigate historical, organization, political topics and discourse of the texts, five discursive strategies are used comprehensive as well as methodological steps are obtained by using qualitative approach. The writer also looking for information or the secondary sources from the library, online research like books, journal, articles and any other information that related to the subject matter. The writer portrays the racism issue in the film is the result of the social discrimination, prejudice and historical aspect. The writer also finds that the racism in the primary source is produced by the white who do not accept the dignity and power of the Blackman.
