Abstract

Esther Messermen Broner, an American-Jewish feminist who pays attention to woman‟s problems wrote a novel A Weave of Women in 1978 in which the story is based on the true story about woman discrimination in Jerusalem, Israel. This novel also reveals struggles of a group of Jewish women against oppression in their society that is influenced by patriarchal system which always gives advantages for men in all spheres including religion, family, education, work life, military, politic and other societal life, and at the same time discriminates and exiles women from those areas. By this thesis, the writer attempts to observe those women position in their society as it is represented in the novel and their efforts or actions against the oppression in the Israeli‟s three main domains: family, religion and societal life. In order to get a deep analysis of the oppression and struggle, the writer applies feminism as the main theory. Furthermore, she also applies the Biale‟s theory of Israeli women in mapping the Jewish women position within their society. As the result of the analysis, Israeli women are oppressed and marginalized by patriarchal culture that always place men superior to women. At the end of this novel, after passing long and difficult struggle, the women characters succeeds in yearning equal position between women and men. However, it shows how does patriarchal culture deeply rooted in a society and influences the in habitants.
