Abstract
This thesis describes politeness strategies concerned on refusal used by students of an Islamic school at Pondok Pesantren Al-Ishlah Lamongan. Refusal is considered as one of Face Threatening Acts (FTA). The study used theory of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). It is divided into four: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. The study employed descriptive qualitative theory because the data are collected, analyzed, and described in the form of words rather than in the numerical scores or statistical procedures. The writer got the data by recording the participants‟ conversation in their free time which is located in the class, canteen, and basketball field. Then the data were analyzed by identifying and classifying politeness strategies on refusal. The analysis and discussion of this study point two key findings. First, the participants used all politeness strategies on refusal. Second, the politeness strategies which occur most frequently on refusal are negative politeness. Finally, one of the used of politeness strategies on refusal can be found in students of Al-Ishlah Islamic school‟s utterances.
