Abstract

English has become a second language and become a compulsory subject that has been offered to Indonesians from Kindergarten up to University level of education. In process of learning English, error is part of learning process that cannot be separated from the learners. There are many factors that cause errors in learning English, such as coherence problems, overgeneralizing the grammatical rules and many more. The objectives of this study are to find out the grammatical errors in writing IV made by D3 student of the English Department and also to find out the most common grammatical errors in writing IV made by D3 students of the English Department. The population of this study was all the students in class A of D3 English Department of Airlangga University who took writing IV and the number of the students who took writing IV in class A of D3 was 24 students. For this study, the writer only discussed five types of errors namely :Agreement, Tenses, Passive Sentences, Preposition and Article. Ignoring other types of errors was due to time, knowledge and fund. From data collection and analysis process, the writer found a total number of 84 grammatical errors, coming from 25 errors in the use of Agreement or 29.1%, 22 errors in Tenses or 26.1%, including 7 errors in the simple present tense and 15 errors in the simple past tense, 15 errors in the use of Passive sentences or 17.8%, 13 errors in the use of Articles or 15.4% and 9 errors in the use of Prepositions or 10.71%. The Influences of transfering from their Indonesian to English may be one of the factors that cause errors in learning English.
