Abstract

Transsexual refers to people who change their birth gender into the opposite one because they feel there is something wrong in their birth body. This study examines the main character, a transsexual woman, Bree, in Duncan Tucker’s Transamerica. This study discuses the transition of Bree as a transsexual woman who lives in America in 1970s and how heteronormativity exist in her family in accepting her as transsexual woman. Two basic questions are, first, how the transition process of Bree as the transsexual woman is. Second, how Bree negotiates heteronormativity in her family. There are no specific theories that deal with transsexual issues. So, John Phillips’ and Donald E. Hall’s concepts will be used as the theory. This will be a qualitative research, where most of the data is taken from the film, Transamerica. Library research is done related to journal, and other resources which are appropriate in conducting the study. This study discovers that the transition of Bree takes some levels which are cross dressing, hormone therapy, and practice her woman voice and she negotiates heteronormativity in her family by considering that they were dead and agreed with the term gender dysphoria.
