Abstract

American Corner is a discussion place that students are required to speak English, especially in Conversation Club. However, the students still switch from English to Indonesian. This study aims to investigate the types of code switching and the factors that influence the code switching in Conversation Club. This study also analyzes the proficiency of the speaker by using linguistic forms. The participants in Conversation Club are students of Universitas Airlangga. The writer used Holmes’ theory (2008) to classify types and factors of code switching. Then, Holmes’ theory (2008) was also used to analyze the proficiency of the speaker by using linguistic forms (intra-sentential and inter-sentential switching). Hoffman’s theory (1991) was used to analyze the factors of code switching. This study was done by employing qualitative approach. The data were collected by recording the conversation between students. The writer also conducted an interview to know the reason of code switching. Then, the data were also transcribed. The result of this study reveals that situational code switching is more dominant than metaphorical. It means that the students switched language with a reason. Then, the linguistic form that dominant is intra-sentential. The last, there are seven reasons found, namely topic, repetition for clarification, switching for affective function, lexical borrowing, expression of solidarity, interjection, and intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor. The dominant reason of code switching is lexical borrowing. Most of lexical borrowing happens because the students are learning.
