Abstract

This study is about the pattern of labeling that used by mothers of low economic status in teaching object’s name to their 2-3 years old children. Having conversation with children, parents especially mother usually offered information about the use of language to their children in children’ word learning process. The way mothers delivered the information to children involved the patterns that important for children’ language development. This research aims to discover the pattern that will be used by mothers in Indonesia. There are 12 pairs of mothers and children in this research. They were asked to play and study using the pictures of stimulants which are provided by the writer. Mothers were asked to teach objects’ name from the pictures to their child. The previous research found that there are three patterns that may occur in mothers’ utterances. Those patterns are the pattern of one label for one object, the pattern of multilabels with bridging for one object, and the pattern of multilabels without bridging for one object. Based on the statistical test, it is found that the pattern of multilabels with bridging for one object is the pattern mostly used by mothers whether in the context of basic category or in the context of subordinate category.
