Abstract
Language is a tool that human uses to communicate to each other. There are so many language varieties that human use and one of them is register. Register is a language variation used by particular groups for particular situation. For example in sports, there is register variation used by sports commentators. There are two kinds of sport commentaries, first is play-by-play commentary and second is colour commentary. The data was taken by downloading the video match between Los Angeles Lakers versus Boston Celtic in National Basketball Association (NBA). The writer used two theories, first was theory about register from Janet Holmes (1992), and second was theory about English syntax by Andrew Redford (2005) in order to analyze the syntactic pattern. In this study the writer used qualitative approach when the writer made the analysis. From the analysis, the writer found that NBA commentator produced three syntactic characteristics, first was syntactic reduction (truncated null subject, reduction of verb, reduction of auxiliary, reduction of affix, clitisation), second was syntactic inversion and the last characteristic was heavy noun modification.
