Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the most common grammatical errors that happen in the work of students in Writing II in regular class at the English Department of Airlangga University. The population of this study is the English Department students of Airlangga University who took Writing II. 20 students’ critical essays of 26 students’ in regular class were chosen by using random sampling. The discussion was limited to four error types: articles, agreement, passive sentences, and tenses. Other types of errors are intentionally ignored. The finding of the study showed that the highest percentage of errors done was errors in tenses (35%), followed by articles (27%), agreement (20%), and passive (18%). The discussion in this thesis is supported by Ellis’ (1997:19) statement that there are four ways to identify learners’ errors, they are omission, overgeneralization, misinformation, and misordering. 64% students’ work are classified as “misinformation”. This showed that the students did the errors because they transferred their knowledge of the first language (Indonesian) into English.
