Abstract
This study is discussing a problem of life which always appears in daily activity, that is, frustration in Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge. The writer regards Michael Henchard, the main character, as undergoing frustration because he is ruined by his innocent wife and leads him into the condition of frustration. Therefore, the study will discuss the illustration of frustration of Michael Henchard and explain the causes that put him into the frustration. As mentioned above that frustration always appears in our daily activity and nobody wants to experience such frustration, by this study then we are going to know frustration phenomena, its causes and by understanding of such knowledge we will be able to overcome problems which lead us into the condition of frustration. Seemingly, this study focuses on Michael Henchard's characterization of frustration and also on the factors that cause him to be in frustration. The writer then uses psychological approaching analysing Michael Henchard's frustration and explain it based on the given theory.
