Abstract

In a broad analysis, Pearl S. Buck's The Exile is the story of an American missionary's wife living in China. As an American woman, she is raised in a democratic, wealthy religious family. Her surrounding condition shapes her personality into a religious one until one day she determines herself that she wants to become a missionary. Carie, the character, finds a way to implement her desire to become a missionary. She decides to marry a missionary, Andrew, who is expected to assist her implementing her purpose. These couple go to China with consideration that it will be more useful to preach there than in their own country.
