Abstract

The writer of this study makes an analysis about tone of the narrator in Elizabeth Strout" s Olive Kiueridge. This study aims to analyze how tone functions and works in the story. From the story of Olive Kitteridge, the writer will start the discussion about tone. The tone that the writer tries to analyze has the connection with the narrator. Not only the narrator"s tone but also the connection about the tone with the main character. The analysis is using New Criticism theory and the method is descriptive analytic method. In this study, the writer discusses about the tone in the story, and the narrator's tone towards the main character. Since New Criticism is applied to analyze the tone, the study also reveals about the characterization of the main character that is closely related to the tone. The characters, the tone and the narrator will be discussed and the study finds that there is a difference in the narrator's tone. This study also finds that actually the narrator does not change, only the point of view of the narrator.
