Abstract

The Cherry Orchard is the last and the most famous play of Anton Chekhov. It was written and produced during the last year of his life. This play represents a social evolution when traditional ruling class is forfeiting its position of superiority, and other class are rising to take its place. The social change in this play is represented by the sale of the cherry orchard. The cherry orchard as the inheritance of Ranevskaya's ancestor must be sold to pay the debts. The main cause of this sale is bankruptcy as the result of many problems. After five years abroad, Mme. Ranevskaya returns to her ancestral estate. The estate is going to be mortgaged to pay her debts. The estate where the cheny orchard within is an inheritance of her ancestor. The orchard symbolizes the happiness and innocence of the owners' life, those are Ranevskaya and Gayev.
