Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the errors produced by the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kembangbahu, Lamongan. By focusing on the error, both teacher and students will know the development of learning English. This paper is limited only to analyzing the errors that the students made in the use of Simple Present tense, Simple Past tense and Simple Future tense. In addition, this paper discusses the tense errors that the students mostly made. To gather the data, the writer collected the students' writting exercises during one semester. There are seven steps that the writer used to get the result: identifying the students' sentences, classifying and describing the error, explaining the errors, evaluating the errors' effects, counting the errors, transferring the number of errors into the percentages, and discussing the result. In the study, the writer found that the students produced errors in each tense, Simple Present tense (54.16%), Simple Past tense (16.67%), and Simple Future tense (29.17%). They produced most errors in the Simple Present tense (54.16%). Therefore, it can be concluded that English tenses are still problematic for eighth grade students in SMPN I Kembangbahu, Lamongan
