Abstract

In conversation, a speaker constructs utterances to deliver his or her intention to hearer. Since language both states and perfonns, then, to make an utterance is to perfonn an act. In other words, speaker might say something and simultaneously perfonns an act. This is called illocutioruny act of an utterance. However, an utterance might have more than one illocutionary act, which is further divided into direct illocutionmy act and indirect illocutionary act. This study is aimed at finding out kinds of direct illocutionary acts and indirect illocutionary acts which refer to the meanings of the words uttered in the fiction. The writer analysed direct and indirect illocutionary act found in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret based on the theory of illocutionmy acts proposed by J.L. Austin and Hurford and Heasley. At the end of the analysis, the writer made a table to show the result. The table shows that the act of requesting is the dominant one, which is followed by the act of questioning, suggesting, and commanding. Other acts were also found but the occurrence was between one and five times.
