Abstract

Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales is one of famous classic fairy tales which has brought some values to the readers both adults and children. The purpose of this study was to investigate gender stereotypes in fairy tales in order to raise awareness of gender issues in children development, especially in the reading process. This study contributes an understanding about gender stereotype of male and female characters particularly in children literature based on corpus linguistics analysis. The source of data of Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales was selected for intensive analysis among the other popular fairy tales. The corpus analysis was used to analyze and examined the texts how female and male characters were portrayed by applying mixed-method approach. This study tries to determine the collocates related to the nouns 'boy', 'girl', 'prince' and 'princess' that comprise adjectives and verbs. The writer uses Taylor (2003) theory and correlates it with Eckert and Ginet (203) theory about gender stereotype in children's book. The results indicated that those chosen nouns were presented in stereotypical terms. Adjective collocate attached to 'girl' and 'princess' also applied in the adjective collocates of 'boy' and 'princess' in Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales. In contrast, collocates of verbs shown that 'boy' and 'prince' used activity verbs intensively higher than 'girl' and 'princess'.
