Abstract

Self-identity is an essential for a person to understand and to relate with other people in his environment. Only when he comprehends who and what he is, he can behave as a social being. On the contrary, if he has not obtained his self-identity yet, he becomes anxious and upset. It means that he undergoes identity crisis. Therefore, he must end this crisis as soon as possible so that he can obtain his self-identity and free himself from the uncertainty on his life. Macon Dead Jr. alias Milkman in Song of Solomon is an example of a person who had striven for his self-identity and for his freedom from the disturbing uncertainty and pessimism on his life for more than thirty years. This uncertainty and pessimism was the effect of both Milkman's disorganized family and the confronted indifferent materialistic Michigan society. Besides, Milkman's life was trapped among the confronted beliefs of his father, his best friend, and his aunt.
