Abstract

Imperialism is related to domination of one country to another country. It can be achieved by controlling all life aspects of the colonized country, including the language. Through standardizing the native language, the imperialist country will be able to control its empire. This thesis is an analysis about British imperialism through language in Ireland. It will show how the colonizer expands the power through language, and how the colonized against it. To support the analysis, the postcolonial theory proposed by Ashcroft et al will be applied. The theory is considered appropriate since in one of its concepts talks about control over language in imperial era. The imperialist country uses language as a tool to dominate all life aspects of the colonized people. The theory will be applied to analyze how language can be used to maintain the imperialist power in the colonized country.
