Abstract
Swear word is linguistic form of how people show their emotions, such as feeling angry, surprised, and frustration (Jay, 2009). Although it was defined as anything negative, the use of swear words by people recently has become familiar to be heard. Since it can be used to release speaker's negative emotions but it i s also can occur in any form of conversations. This study aims to investigate the swear words used in JK4 fan page on Facebook. On this research the writer used the theory of swear words classifications by Timothy Jay to identify the swear words based on meaning of swear words and also the functions of the swear words by Anderson & Trudgill that appear in the comments. The result shows that six types from Jay's classifications occur to be used by the members. The four types absent were profanity, blasphemy, slui"s and slang. Moreover, all the swear words functions proposed by Anderson & Trudgill occur to be used by the members of JK4. It shows that the use of the swear words by the members were not related to religions and ethnicity because of these two hold the important role in society. Furthennore, the result also shows that the highest frequency of swear wofds functions appear in the data is Auxiliary. It indicates that the functions of swear words has been shifted, as it is previously purposed as the tool to express negative emotions, now it might become the way of the speaking.
