Abstract

In a community in which two or more languages are used in communication, people know how to use one language instead of another which is appropriate to and suit the person whom they are talking to. The English Department of Airlangga University is a multilingual society since there are at least three languages which are used: English, Indonesian and, sometimes, Javanese. People involved in this the lectures and the students, are able to choose the most appropriate language according to the circumstances. However, this study only discusses the languages used in the formal rather than less formal classes. Thus, Javaneses is not discussed in this study. This study is about the use of Indonesian by the lecturers of the English Department of Airlangga University in the non-skill classes. It deals with the Language Choice pattern which is used by the lecturers and is expected by the students in the non-skill classes. This is related to their need and their English competence.
