Abstract

as subJecl<; for study.Eiderly are susceptible to psychological problems. One ofthese problems is depression. Elderly ,,;th depression need more support system fromthe family they live with. However,depression in elderly and the importance ofsupport from their family remain less understoodThis study tL'\ed cross sectional design with total sample of 62respondents.who were taken by means of purposive sampling metllod.Variablesmeasured were family support as independent variable,presented as statements of 5family's duties in hcalth,which had been developed according to theoreticalconcept. The dependent variable was depression in elderly,p~sented their response tostatements in Geriatric Depression Scale.Data were collected by using structuredinterview to elderly and their family in the working area of Puskesmas I,SouthDenpasar.Data were analyzed using chi square test with p=0,05.Data collected revealed general data on the characteristics of the respondentsas follow among the elderly.41.9% were between 65-69 years old,and 54,8%of tllefamily were between 40-50 years old.Most of the elderly(53,2%)had no formalcducation.and most of the family(45,2%)was educated at high school.Workingelderly and working family were respectively 80,6% and 96,8%.Majority of theelderly (54,8~i>) were female and head of the family (93,5%) were male. The elderlyand the family were mostly (83,~-ll) Hindu.The rate of family support was good (75,8%),and the level of depression inthe elderly was 6 I ) 0·o indicating no depression. Result of analysis of correlationhetween family support and level of depression in elderly using chi square testrevealed p=O,OOO.In nmdusion.family support has significant influence on level of depressionin elderlY who live \\ith the famihc. c c
