Abstract

Fibrosis of the corpus cavemosum is a histologic appearance obtained from patients with erectile dysfunction. It is known that in pulmonary fibrosis and hepatic cirrhosis, fibrosis occurs through elevation of transforming growth factor-~ (TGF-~). In this study bilateral partial ligation of the common iliac arteries in rabbits (Oryctalagus cuniculus) were performed. Group A were terminated after 2 x 24 hours, group B were terminated after 7 x 24 hours, and group C as control underwent a sham operation and were terminated after 7 days. TGF-β was measured by immunohistochemical techniques, while ratio of smooth muscle to collagen were calculated after staining with Mallory's aniline blue collagen stain. Observation results in the 2 x 24 hours ligation group were TGF-β 13.95%; smooth muscle 91.08; collagen 91.08; and proportion of smooth muscle was 49.99%. All these results were not significantly different compared to the control group (TGF-β 11.98%; smooth muscle 93.90, collagen 86.90, and proportion of smooth muscle 51.97%). In the 7 x 24 hours ligation group observation results of TGF-β and collagen were significantly elevated compared to the control group (TGF-β 31.40%, collagen 113.83). While observation results of smooth muscle and proportion of smooth muscle was significantly decreased compared to the control group (smooth muscle 67.33, proportion of smooth muscle 37.21%). From the study results it can be concluded that, as in pulmonary fibrosis and hepatic cirrhosis, fibrosis of the corpus cavemosum in erectile dysfunction is also mediated by elevation of TGF-β.
