Abstract

Hyperlipidemia is a term that refers to a disorder that causes an increase in the lipid profile in the human body. According to data from the Global Burden of Cardiovascular Disease in 2015, the estimated aged-standardized rate of death caused by cardiovascular disease worldwide is 6,304 deaths per 100,000 lives and in Indonesia CHD is the first and main cause of death with a percentage of 26.4% of all deaths. death. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the ethanolic extract of Paederia foetida (EEPF) on total cholesterol levels in dexamethasone-induced hyperlipidemic rats. This study was an in vivo experimental study with post-test only complete randomized design (CRD). The research process was carried out at the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, Surabaya, Indonesia, from June 2021 to November 2021. The EEPF was made by maceration method in 96% ethanol solvent. The experimental animals used were 36 male albino Wistar rats, healthy and weighing 150- 200 grams. The study was carried out by dividing the experimental animals randomly into a normal control group, K- (dexa treatment control), K+ (comparison group), group K1 (EEPF 250 mg/kg), group K1 (EEPF 500 mg/kg), and group K1 (EEPF 500 mg/kg). K3 (EEPF 1000 mg/kg). Blood samples were taken from the tail vein and total cholesterol levels were measured by the point of care testing (POCT) method. Data analysis was performed using One-way ANOVA followed by the post hoc test of the smallest significant difference (BNT). The results showed that the administration of dexamethasone (10 mg/kg) for 14 days caused a significant increase in total cholesterol levels, while in the comparison group simvastatin, K1, and K2 there was a significant decrease in total cholesterol levels when compared to the K- group. In the K3 group, there was no significant reduction in total cholesterol levels. In conclusion, the ethanolic extract of Paederia foetida at a dose of 250 mg/KgBW and 500 mg/KgBW could reduce total cholesterol levels in dexamethasone-induced hyperlipidemic rats, while doses of 1000 mg/KgBW could not reduce total cholesterol levels in dexamethasone-induced hyperlipidemic rats. Among the three doses, the dose that resulted in the highest reduction was the dose of 250 mg/KgBW.
