Abstract

Ecological failure is one of the discussions of environmental problems in literary texts, and one of the ecological failures in the literary text is in Frank Herbert’s Dune (1965). This research examines the portrayals of ecological failure in Arrakis and how the Fremen as the native respond to it. This research uses a qualitative method alongside Greg Garrard’s Ecocriticism theory. In the text, ecological failure can be seen through four essential points from human activity, climate- environmental living, natural resources, and a giant worm called Shai-Hulud in Arrakis. These four essential points illustrate how ecological failure exists in Arrakis by linking the concepts of ecological failure and ecocentrism. This study finds that Fremen’s responses to the ecological failure affect their culture and behavior in living their lives. They believe that the power of nature was higher than humans. By positioning nature as a God, Fremen belive that nature can create, change, and destroy human activities in Arrakis.
