Abstract

One of the many ways of communication is to address someone. People frequently employ address terms to their interlocutor by uttering specific callings. Wardhaugh (2006) defined address term as the way one names or address another. This study aims to identify the types of address terms used for addressing the main characters of the Crown Series Season 4 and to reveal the social factors that underlie their usage. This study also looks at how the address terms relate to politeness. A qualitative method is employed to analyze the data. The data were taken from the interaction among the main characters in The Crown Season 4. This study identifies the type of address terms and the social factors affecting the choice of each address terms using the theory proposed by Wardhaugh (2006). In this study, the writer found 121 address terms used in 78 interactions. The address terms found in this study include first name, title, kinship term, pet name, title plus last name, and title plus first name. Meanwhile, there are a total of 160 social factors influencing the use of address terms. The social factors are particular occasion, social status or rank, transactional status, age, family relationship, occupational hierarchy, and intimacy. Title is the most common address term found in this study and social status or rank is the social factor that mostly influence the choice of address terms. This is due to the fact that the main characters in this study are public figures with high social status.
