Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Basil Leaves ethanol extract on the liver of white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced by Gentamicin in the form of degeneration, necrosis, and portal inflammation. The white rats used were male wistar strain, aged 2-3 months and weighing 150-200 grams, as many as 25 animals and divided into five groups. White rats were adapted for seven days, on day 1 to 17 were given Basil leaves extract and on days 8 to 17 were induced by Gentamicin. This group consisted of the negative control group (only given 1% CMC-Na and aqua pro injection), the positive control group (1% CMC-Na and induction of Gentamicin 80 mg/kgBW), the P1 treatment group (200 mg/kgBW Basil leaves ethanol extract + Gentamicin 80 mg/kgBW induction), the P2 treatment group (400 mg/kgBW Basil leaves ethanol extract + Gentamicin 80 mg/kgBW induction), and the P3 treatment group (800 mg/kgBW Basil leaves ethanol ecxtract + Gentamicin 80 mg/kgBW induction). On day 18 all rats were sacrificed and liver organs were taken for microscopic examination with Hematoxylin Eosin staining. The result of the Kruskall-Wallis test indicate that there is a significant difference (p<0.05), which means that the treatment affect the research variables in the form of degeneration, necrosis, and portal inflammation. The differences between treatments were shown based on the result of the Mann-Whitney test. The mechanism of action of Basil leaves extract as protection against the liver is based on its effectiveness as an antioxidant by preventing oxidative stress, and increasing antioxidant enzymes. The conclusion of this study, giving Basil leaves ethanol extract at doses of 200, 400, and 800 mg/kgBW had an effect in prevent the liver damage which was marked by a decrease in the degree of damage based on the scoring result in the form of degeneration, necrosis, and portal inflammation liver of white rats
