Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Purwoceng extract (Pimpinella pruatjan Molkenb.) on the viability and membrane integrity of the male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) spermatozoa exposed to cigarette smoke. This studied was experimental study using 25 male white rats of the Wistar strain which was divided into 5 treatment groups including K(-) was untreated group; K(+) was exposed to cigarette smoke; group P1, P2, and P3 was exposed to cigarette smoke and suspension of Purwoceng extract (39 mg/Kg), (76 mg/Kg), (135 mg/Kg). Exposure to cigarette smoke was given within 30 days and the extract was given for 7 days. The study showed that the dose of Purwoceng extract P2 effectively increased 87% of the percentage spermatozoa viability and 70,1% of the percentage integrity spermatozoa membrane when compared to K(+) which was 67,4% and 37,9% due to the flavonoid content of Purwoceng extract as well as the ability of rat reproductive hormonal homeostasis to improve the adverse effects of cigarette smoke. At a dose of P1 can maintan the normal percentage of spermatozoa viability up to 80% and spermatozoa membrane integrity up to 63% when compared to K(-) with viability 82,3% and membrane integrity 63,5%. At the highest dose P3 Purwoceng extract, the percentage of spermatozoa viability decreased 80% and spermatozoa membrane integrity decreased 61,1% when compared to K(-) and group P2. Based on this result, administration of Purwoceng extract at a dose of 76 mg/Kg BW is the optimal dose because it can increase the percentage of viability and membrane integrity of male white rats spermatozoa exposed to cigarette smoke
