Abstract

Semen which stored in 5°C temperature can causes of reactive oxygen species production. This condition results in spermatozoa damage, and quality decreased. This study aims to determine the effect of vitamin E in maintaining motility, viability, and reducing spermatozoa abnormality. The samples used were semen fresh collected from goat Sapera. It was divided into four different treatment groups. The control treatment or P0 contained semen sample + egg yellow tris diluent and treatment 1, 2 and 3 or P1, P2, and P3 contain semen sample + egg yellow tris diluent + vitamin E. The concentration of vitamin E for P1, P2, and P3 were based on the volume of diluent, in sequence were 1 mg/ml, 2 mg/ml, and 3 mg/ml. The least decline of spermatozoa motility, viability, and increase in abnormality was found in P1, which was significantly different to P0 (p <0,05). However, P3 and P0 did not show significant difference in the results of motility and abnormality evaluation (p> 0,05). It can be concluded that vitamin E at the concentration of 1 mg/ml can be an efficient antioxidants supplement in egg yellow tris diluent for semen Sapera.
