Abstract

Speech act theory investigates how people express and deliver their motives using utterances. The utterances said by the speaker are also related to social goals or attempts to achieve something. In political speech, speech acts used to gain attention or strengthen the image of the political figure. This study believes that Vladimir Putin's speech not only delivered a message but also performed various acts that reflected social agreement on the issue and asked society to do something. This study analyzes the types of illocutionary acts and the dominant type found in Vladimir Putin’s speech when addressing Ukraine, Donbass, and NATO. The present study employed a qualitative approach and a theory of illocutionary acts by Searle (1969). The transcription chosen is from a speech posted in en.kremlin.ru website on 21st February 2022. The result of the study found that there are 163 utterances of illocutionary acts. Assertive type is the most dominant type performed by Vladimir Putin with 102 total occurrences or 62,8% of total percentage. Expressive force was frequently used by Vladimir Putin since it is believed that the speaker could express his point of view or feelings regarding the agreements of Russia's military operation addressed to Ukraine on 22nd February 2022.
