Abstract

Oral ulcer is one of the most common oral lesions in society. The prevalence of oral ulcer worldwide reaches 4% and in Indonesia is 46.3%. The use of topical corticosteroid drugs in oral ulcers has adverse side effects in the oral cavity. Therefore, natural ingredients are needed as an alternative treatment for oral ulcers. Aloe vera is a herbal plant that has antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor properties, can increase the body's immunity, and has low side effects. Purpose: To compare the effectiveness of Aloe vera extract and Triamcinolone acetonide as anti-inflammatory in oral ulcer healing. Method: Systematic review was conducted based on PRISMA. Searches were performed using three databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science using the specified keywords. Articles are limited to the year 2012-2022 and published in English. Assessment of article quality was carried out using the Quality Appraisal of Randomized Controlled Trial Checklist from JBI. Result: There are 4 clinical studies included which showed pain scores and reduced size of oral ulcer applied with Aloe vera extract is lower than Triamcinolone acetonide. Conclusion: The effectiveness of Aloe vera extract is lower than Triamcinolone acetonide as an anti-inflammatory in oral ulcer healing.
