Abstract
Feminism prioritizes the equality between a man and woman. Girl power subculture movement gathers women and girls to fight for their justice against strong social ideologies such as capitalism and patriarchal culture as it can portrays in a movie. Fast & Furious 9 is a movie about a group’s journey to save the world from the enemy’s project. This movie narrated the portrayal of girl power from its female characters. This research aims to analyze female characters' actions that signify girl power in Fast & Furious 9 and discover the ambivalence of girl power which is implicitly reflected. To analyze and explain the issue of this study, the researcher uses narrative approach using A.J Greimas’ narrative theory to examine the narrative aspects and non-narrative approach by analyzing mise-en-scene elements. The findings of the narrative analysis revealed that women characters do portrays the girl power as it narrated in the movie that women characters appear as subject actant in the most of the sequence. Furthermore, the non-narrative aspects support the finding of how women characters present girl power through their action and appearance. However, from the analysis of feminism, this research found that women as a subject in Fast & Furious 9 movie still portrays ambivalence implied in how the male characters mostly appears as helper for the female, which indicate that women are not truly independent with her own ability. This research concludes that Hollywood movie is still progressing in portraying women empowerment.
